Predictions: Crew (h) v Union

Final game of the season for both teams. A win or draw today and the Crew could finish as high as 7th on the overall MLS table, making it the best finish since 2010 (5th).

2010: 5th Place finish on overall table
2011: 9th
2012: 10th
2013: 16th
2014: 7-9th

MATCH NOTES:

*End of the road for this feature here at this site so a hardy Congratulations to Adam Jardy, beat writer for the Columbus Dispatch, for getting most of this year's Crew games correct (18 of 33). The two most important things any Crew fan should read every game week is Jardy's "Crew Notebook" and "How it might play out" in the game preview section of the paper. Which reminds me, subscribe to the newspaper. The physical one. When you read the paper you remove distractions. No links, no wormholes to fall into. Just a conversation between your thoughts and the writer. Try it (especially you, sports person). You might like it.

MATCH THOUGHTS
This one is like a blank canvas of which these two teams will paint. With Federico Higuain and Waylon Francis out the Crew will be forced to modify their normally consistent lineup by at least two on top of the switching back and forth we've seen of late with Hector Jimenez and Eric Gehrig at right fullback.

On the Union side comes a team that is on the down side of a coaching change high. After getting 12 pts from five games a month ago, the team has not managed a win in the last four (all of them against Eastern Conference teams). In some ways, Philly is in the same place the Crew were late last year.

Without Higuain holding the middle of the field together, I expect this one to play loose. It's a wonderful opportunity for Ben Speas (if he is the replacement) to showcase himself in a tough, intense environment.

Philly likes the quick counter and Le Toux likes to drift wide. Tony Tchani and Wil Trapp will be the guys for the Crew to watch. They will be busy and if they are not in full form, the Crew will drop three tonight unless coach Berhalter tells Jimenez and Anor (or whomever plays the outside fullback roles) to stay home. Tyson Wahl, Bernardo Anor, Justin Meram will also factor in to this one as their road performances have been up and down.

Weather: Rain midday but stop by game time. The natural surface will be wet and the temps down in the mid 50s. Great soccer weather!

MATCH THOUGHTS
Revs overwhelming favorites today as the Crew will do their best to play the part of not getting the three game road run off to a bad start. The clear goal here for both teams is to avoid the play-in wildcard game. Although, finishing 4th is actually a pretty good place to be from a financial standpoint as you get a guaranteed bonus home match. Either way, avoiding that 5th place finish should be paramount. Of course, losing and falling out of the MLS Cup would be bad as well. (This whole thing, ugh.)

Turf always plays a role for road teams at Gillette, especially when there are lines all over the pitch (as I expect there to be today), for teams that like to hang on to the ball as the Crew does. Bounces are different, distances are harder to judge, and sliding tackles are virtually eliminated. A completely different game, really.

Ohh, checking on the weather... looks like 60, and damp. Probably raining during the match. One of those Autumn rains I hope, which is like a drizzle. I wouldn't mind if the cameras wondered out of the stadium and walked amongst the trees for two hours. I'm sure the colors are really fantastic up there right now. I was up in Manchester, NH around this time a couple years ago, just beautiful.

Trees should be hitting their midseason form right now.

MATCH THOUGHTS
This week see's the Crew as heavily favored as I have seen them in three years. The BET365 line of 8/15 is about has large as it gets in MLS just in general. Win Draw Win shows a large stake on a 2-0 win and voters only going Montreal 8% of the time (as low as it gets).

8 AM, Sept 27, German Village
One of the benefits to they way the Crew play now is that they can hold off below average teams, even if they aren't having their best day. Last week's 1-0 victory over New England was an intense and meaningful. With more of that coming up on the road for the team this match falls prey to the proverbial "trap game" (...and I told myself I wouldn't write that, gah!).

Helping the Crew out, if they do come out flat, will be the possibility that Ignacio Piatti not playing. He's a very, very good player on a Montreal has a handful of good players.

Crew fans will remember Dilly Duka and he is having a great year on a bad team (whoscored.com has him rated in to quarter). They've also got Hassoun Camara, Andres Romero, and Justin Mapp. Their deep rooted flaw is not those guys, it's depth and players that are suppose to be good but are playing very average. Felipe Martins, Jack McInerney, Patrice Bernier and even Marco Di Vaio fall into the average bucket and shouldn't.

Weather looks great. Clear and mid-70s. Being the time of year this is, you should see loads of nice long shadows and the east stands soaked in a beautiful golden hue. It's magic time here in Ohio.

MATCH THOUGHTS
This one will be closer than the predictions above suggest. Revs are on fire and the Crew draw last week only came via goal from a non-goal scoring player. Had they not gotten it and lost, all predictions above would be New England.

If Hector Jimenez and Bernardo Anor are in the midfield today the Crew will hold this one together. They got away with not playing them against a poor possession team in Houston - they will not against the Revs.

Partly cloudy, mid 70s tonight.

GAME THOUGHTS
Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch writes in today's paper that it would be "shocking" if the Crew lose this one. Over at WhoScored.com, Graham Ruthven talks about the Crew going through a "mini revival." Home base hype machine MLSsoccer.com doesn't trust Columbus quite yet, somewhat surprisingly has 4 of the 6 on panel going with a draw.

Over at the betting sites we see that the Crew hold slight edge. BET365.com has home and away at 13/8 draw at 23/10. Win Draw Win your vote sections likes the Crew here, 44% of the vote (MTL 20%). Large Stake is on 0-1 Away.

Montreal's home record this year is abysmal, as is there overall, but the Crew Away record doesn't exactly sparkle either (one win in last ten). That said, seems to be little question that the Columbus Crew are favorites tonight.

The only question tonight for the Crew is how the team will approach this match tactically in the back. Even with Giancarlo Gonzalez, head coach Gregg Berhalter holds back a little bit on the road. With two big wins in as many weeks at home one wonders if he will approach this one the same way. There's no reason he shouldn't, but there is some risk there of some 'in form' role players regressing. Especially a few of the less experienced ones, as this match is on the road.

For a full preview on the match head over to Massive Report to check out Pat Murphy's conversation with Sofiane Benzaza of Mount Royal Soccer.

Weather looks agreeable, partly cloudy and in the mid to high 70s.

GAME THOUGHTS
Going to be a calmer, more business as usual feel to the match tonight after the big show last week against the LA Galaxy. Houston never really draws many fans but crowds have been better this season.

No doubt that the Crew should be favored in this one but it's certainly not as much as the predictions above indicate. Houston likes to lurk in the standings and look to be game for a late season push. After going a couple months with pretty much no points, over the last three weeks they have beat DC and beat Philly.

Questions for the match today revolve around Giancarlo (looking like he is in Italy), Ethan Finlay (can he keep up this ridiculous form) and whomever plays up top (need a goal from a forward today).

So this one will be closer but the Crew should still be the ones with 3 points when it ends.

Looks to be on the warm side tonight, possibly damp as well.

Pat Murphy has his scouting report ready for your review here.

MY PREDICTION
The Galaxy always packs them in here in Columbus but in a bit of a twist this year the Crew have decided to turn this match into a big top circus event. Let's run down the list:

• We've got a press conference announcing a new team president two hours before kickoff. Crew head coach Gregg Berhalter is an attendee.

• ...followed by a ceremony honoring Landon Donovan for his time with the USMNT, I think?

• The match (you know, like, the sport of soccer? Like the actual game that few in the US tend to write about but instead write about how US SOCCER IS HERE, MLS IS GROWING, WHAT IF LEBRON PLAYED, ATTENDANCE!, [INSERT CITY] DESERVES A MLS TEAM, AMERICAN YOUTH LIKE SOCCER... I could go on. Same stuff I've been reading since the 80s).

• Postgame fireworks.

That's everything I've got, anyway. The Crew need to be careful today, the best time to catch a Bruce Arena coached team in early in the season. Now is the last time you want to do it. This one has a chance to get ugly if Berhalter and company are not fully prepared. By prepared I mean looking to absorb LA's attack, especially early in the match. Wouldn't mind Crew wing backs (whomever they are tonight) to stay at home.

Weather looks perfect today, really nice.

MY PREDICTION

New England in is that familiar sports journalism area I like to call THE ZONE OF FUTILITY. I'm thinking about naming all these things because it's hard to explain how incredibly boring most of it is. What is THE ZONE OF FUTILITY? It's when you have a team on a bad run and writers just start talking about when the last time they had a bad run was and crank out a piece. I suppose it's fine, gotta write something, right?

Anyway, that's where the Revs are now and all their fans are now being subject to losing streaks of years past. This one is sort of special though and while long streaks like this do pepper result maps in MLS over recent times, they don't happen much. When they do, they are usually snapped after 6,7,8 games or so.

The Revs will eventually snap the streak and facing a below average Crew at Gillette is perfect opportunity. When I can't convince myself the Crew is a clear favorite alarm bells start going off. The Crew aren't here but if they play disciplined and frustrate the Revs early they will win.

Easier said than done however as a young and inexperienced group haven't performed well on the road this year and don't have a win since the opening month of the season.

We shall see. One thing is for certain - the pitch is fake.

--% MASSIVE REPORT ... (no pick)
Head over to Massive Report for Patrick Murphy's latest on the Columbus Crew. He's got a fair take on the current situation.

MY PREDICTION
Hard to overstate how limited the Crew are with their roster. Fully fit, this is a mid-table / average team but with Wil Trapp out (suspension), Hector Jimenez (long term injury), Josh Williams (blood clot), Jairo Arrieta (pulled muscle) and Federico Higuain not all the way back (and used in both games in past week already)... this team is in peril.

All that said, there only a couple teams that the Crew could beat in their current shape on one of them is in town today. Montreal is pretty bad this year. Not patient, not defending well, no cohesion. Just a mess, which is why you seen a heavily favored Columbus.

Pretty sure well see the Crew passing around a non-possession oriented Impact relatively easily but I think the only way this one doesn't end as draw is if we see a penalty or some other kind of mistake late in the match.

Sometimes these lower table games can surprise, though. Both teams will feel this is a good chance to get after it. Worried a little about the Crew defending without Trapp back there helping out an out of form Francis and a Chad Barson who can sometimes get beaten off the dibble (re: Marco di Vaio).

Ultimately, I hope it is a wide open game. Crew Stadium attendance is below average this year and I'm sure some of the fans want to see excitement.

The Crew travel to Red Bull Arena today to take on, uh.. the Red Bulls. 7:00 PM EST kick off, 5:00 pm in Costa Rica for the fans that might want a like at three Ticos returning to league play.

GAME NOTES
CLB: Gonzalez and Francis available.
CLB: Williams still out, Higuain back.
CLB: Roster availability still unstable after rock solid start
NYR: At mostly full strength
NYR: Unbeaten in last 4, last two drawn. Score a lot at home
NYR: Fellow Costa Rican Roy Miller likely back

TEN PREDICTIONS
Number on left is percentage accuracy picking 2014 Columbus Crew results only.

53% WHOSCORED.COM ... NY RED BULLS
Graham Ruthven thinks; "There were signs of aggression and determination against the Coloradao Rapids and they will need some more of that against New York." 1-0 is his final guess in favor of NY.

470% COLUMBUS DISPATCH ... NY RED BULLS
"Until the Crew attack shows signs of its early-season potency, allowing any goals means the visitors will be happy to return home with one point." - Adam Jardy. Pick up a Dispatch, pros... obviously.

41% GOAL.COM ... DRAW (NY LEAN)
Pretty matter of fact from Thomas Floyd this week. "Field Report" reader predictions likes NY.

35% MLSSOCCER ... NY RED BULLS
All up on the Red Bulls this week. 5 for the win, one draw.

35% WIN DRAW WIN ... NY RED BULLS
This one is pretty close this week but leaning NY 2-1 and 37% in the "your vote" section (Crew 28%).

29% BET365 ... NY RED BULLS
4/5 Home side, 14/5 draw, 16/5 Crew. Interesting the fine margin between draw and away win this week. Otherwise pretty stander home favorite.

29% HOME TEAM ... NY RED BULLS

12% TABLE POSITION ... NY RED BULLS
Just barely. Teams have identical records.

--% WV HOOLIGAN ... (no picks)

--% MASSIVE REPORT ... (no pick)
Head over to Massive Report for Patrick Murphy's latest on the Columbus Crew.

MY PREDICTION
Looking forward to the regular season getting its groove back. This one, like so many games during and around the World Cup, just feels strange. Almost like summer camp or summer school.

What sticks out to me is how many goals the Red Bulls have been scoring at home over the last six matches (14). Combine that with Henry, Wright-Phillips (league leader in goals) and a motivated Cahill and this one could get ugly fast (even if Gonzales is back).

The Crew desperately need to find a win or two over the next few weeks. Not only to find some better footing in the standings but also to get fan interest back up.

Crew Rd 17, Away to Colorado

July 4th means annual away match for the Columbus Crew. This year it is against the Colorado Rapids. Kick off is 9:30 PM EST.

 GAME NOTES
CLB: Higuain and Trapp recovering, might be limited
CLB: Starters Giancarlo Gonzalez and Waylon Francis still in Brazil
CLB: Crew team rating dropped to 4th worse according to WhoScored
COL: Have won the last 3 between vs Crew
COL: Have won the last 3 at home, all by shutout
COL: Allow 2nd least shots per game (only behind Sporting KC)

 TEN PREDICTIONS
Number on left is percentage accuracy picking 2014 Columbus Crew results only.

56% WHOSCORED.COM ... COLORADO RAPIDS
Graham Ruthven comfortably most accurate in picking Crew matches this year. His quick take: "The Columbus Crew are languishing in mid-table in the Eastern Conference, having drawn all of their last three games. The Crew will be looking to snap that streak against the Rapids, but with a win rather than a defeat."

50% COLUMBUS DISPATCH ... COLORADO RAPIDS
Lots of good Crew stuff in today's paper, you should go pick it up. Info and quotes on Gonzalez and comments on attendance. Adam Jardy thinks it's difficult to predict a Crew win today in his preview.

44% GOAL.COM ... (no preview yet)

38% MLSSOCCER ... (no picks yet)

38% WIN DRAW WIN ... COLORADO RAPIDS
Heavily Rapids this time. Large stake on 2-0 home win and Crew only getting 14% in the "your votes" (55% Rapids).

31% BET365 ... COLORADO RAPIDS
5/6 odds in Colorado's favor (13/5 draw, 16/5 Crew).

31% HOME TEAM ... COLORADO RAPIDS
Colorado is always a tough place to play but add in a rare Friday kick and likely larger crowd for fireworks and hill gets steeper.

13% TABLE POSITION ... COLORADO RAPIDS
Rapids have a pretty good young team.

--% WV HOOLIGAN ... (no pick)

--% MASSIVE REPORT ... (no pick)
Head over to Massive Report for Patrick Murphy's latest on the Columbus Crew.

 MY PREDICTION
Dillon Powers, Rapids
Tough to say the Crew can pull this one out with almost half the regular starters either missing or in various stages of injury recovery.

Looking at longer view, Crew 10 and 20 game points per game averages in danger of bottoming out at lows not regularly seen in over 7 years. For this to change the Crew are going to have earn more than a couple wins in the coming weeks. The only thing keeping the team in the hunt is the bingo hopper most of the teams seem to have fallen in to during a World Cup year.

Predictions, Crew Rd 16 (Home vs FC Dallas)

FC Dallas is in Columbus today to take on the Crew. Kickoff a slightly later 8:00 PM EST so there is some night for post game fireworks (always brings in a crowd here in the midwest).

 GAME NOTES
CLB: Limited roster, Higuain likely out, Trapp recovering
CLB: Win will help separate from lower half of table
CLB: 1st league game since World Cup break
FCD: Only 1 win last 10 (Crew 1 in last 12)
FCD: Won both US Open Cup games during break
FCD: Missing too many players to mention

 TEN PREDICTIONS
Number on left is percentage accuracy picking 2014 Columbus Crew results only.

53% WHOSCORED.COM ... DRAW
Graham Ruthven gives the edge to Dallas in the game notes saying "If FC Dallas can pick up where they left off, they could take the points from this one," but thinks ultimately it ends with a 1-1 scoreline.

47% COLUMBUS DISPATCH ... COLUMBUS CREW (lean)
Beat writer Adam Jardy admits that this one is a hard to call but in the end seems to think FC Dallas is a team the Crew can beat; "...this is the type of game it needs to win."

40% MLSSOCCER ... COLUMBUS CREW
Picking Crew with gusto! All six votes.

40% WIN DRAW WIN ... COLUMBUS CREW
Medium Stake on 1-0 home win, Your Votes heavy on Crew (60%, Draw 33%, Away 16%).

40% GOAL.COM ... DRAW (Crew lean)
Jon Arnold more or less runs down list of player absences, no lean either way. The fan prediction leans towards Crew.

33% BET365 ... COLUMBUS CREW
Crew at better than even (10/11). FC Dallas 3/1, Draw 12/5.

33% HOME TEAM ... COLUMBUS CREW

13% TABLE POSITION ... FC DALLAS

--% WV HOOLIGAN ... (no pick)

--% MASSIVE REPORT ... (no pick)

 MY PREDICTION

Careful!!
Not many would have predicted Costa Rica to still be in Brazil, but here they are. The Crew are a severely depleted side, both in starters available and overall. Along with absences of starters Giancarlo Gonzalez and Waylon Francis to the World Cup the Crew are also missing Josh Williams and Ethan Finlay. Michael Parkhurst is somewhat questionable as are Wil Trapp and Federico Higuain. Not sure I've seen a Crew roster this way in the last few years.

Dallas isn't much better but their roster is always seems to be a patchwork one. In some ways the two sides have mirrored each other for some time. Inconsistent results and questionable roster decisions at the admin level. Crew fans are hoping that changes in coming months, years.

The Crew might have the edge in this one with the home crowd. Slight chance of rain for the fireworks but weather otherwise looks outstanding. Enjoy the match.

Predictions: Crew Rd 14 v. RSL

Real Salt Lake is in town this evening to take on the Crew. Kickoff is 7:30 PM Eastern.

 GAME NOTES:
CLB: Missing Gonzalez and Francis from back line (World Cup)
CLB: Trapp looks to start, slight knee injury
RSL: Nightmare loss to Seattle past weekend 4-0
RSL: Missing a couple (including Kyle Beckerman) to World Cup

 TEN PREDICTIONS
Number on left is percentage accuracy picking 2014 Columbus Crew results only.

54% WHOSCORED.COM ... DRAW
"Without Kyle Beckerman, Jess Cassar's side lack its midfield spine and this is a chance for the Crew to exploit that," says Graham Ruthven. Ultimatly see's this one as even.

46% COLUMBUS DISPATCH ... DRAW (RSL lean)
No real prediction from Adam Jardy this week. He does mention that the Crew are "under pressure to earn crucial points before the World Cup break against a formidable team that will be missing some key parts because of injury and call-ups."

46% WIN DRAW WIN ...REAL SALT LAKE
For an away side, very strong for RSL this week in both vote (42%) and medium stake on Away win 0-1.

38% BET365 ... COLUMBUS CREW
Home side odds tonight 21/20 Crew (12/5 Draw, 5/2 Away).

38% HOME TEAM ... COLUMBUS CREW

38% MLSSOCCER.COM ... DRAW
This one is straight down the middle. Two Crew, Two RSL, Two Draw.

21% GOAL.COM ... DRAW
No real lean in the summary, Readers like RSL.

15% TABLE POSITION ... REAL SALT LAKE

--% MASSIVE REPORT ... (no pick)
Head on over to Massive Report to get the latest on the Crew.

--% WV HOOLIGAN ... (no pick)

 MY PREDICTION
Anything is possible tonight with all the missing players, which is probably why we see a lot of "draw" predictions. I think that's fair. In other news: Crew fans could see the playing return of both Cole Grossman and Rich Balchan tonight for RSL.

Might see some more rain tonight, either way the playing surface will be slick. Don't expect many at this one but should be a nice one to watch. Enjoy the match.

Crew Rd 7, Home vs NY Red Bulls

The New York Red Bulls are in town this evening to take on the Columbus Crew. Weather is going to be on the cool side over off Hudson Street today so another week you've got to bundle up! Kickoff scheduled for 7:30 PM EST.

 GAME NOTES
CLB: Have saved 3 pts (of 11 total) with goals after 90 mins
CLB: Anor out (RC), Meram likely to start
CLB: Hot start is getting further away
NYR: Beat up on Dynamo midweek 4-0
NYR: Henry might not be making trip
NYR: Cahill could return to lineup

 TEN MATCH PREDICTIONS
Percent on left is accuracy in predicting result of Columbus Crew games only.

50% WIN DRAW WIN ... DRAW (NY LEAN)
Got our first split of the year from this outlet. Wiseguys like a 2-2 Draw but the "Your Vote" section has NY edging out the Crew (37% to 28%, draw at 34%).

33% COLUMBUS DISPATCH ... DRAW
Adam Jardy looks at recent results and thinks this one will come out even. Lots of NHL stuff in the paper today, so if that's your thing, head out and pick up a paper!

33% GOAL.COM ... NY RED BULLS
No name listed on the match preview today but whoever it is comes out strong for NY. "Another strong showing would likely be enough to pick up points against a Columbus team that has struggled of late."

33% WHOSCORED.COM ... DRAW (NY LEAN)
Graham Ruthven back on the scene today to tell us NY "should pick up three points at Columbus, but we've been saying that all season." Ultimately, going with a 1-1 draw.

17% BET365 ... COLUMBUS CREW
Crew are favored again here today but the bettors out there seem to be getting off the Columbus train. 23/20 Crew, 12/5 Draw, 23/10 NY.

17% HOME TEAM ... COLUMBUS CREW
Columbus' home record not something to be desired.

17% MLSSOCCER ... COLUMBUS CREW
Team over at MLS HQ still all in with the Crew. Five of the six actually going with the home side today. Only one thinking somethings up in Matt Doyle, who picks Draw.

0% TABLE POSITION ... COLUMBUS CREW
Crew have the edge on NY still. That could actually change today.

0% WV HOOLIGAN ... DRAW
"Look for this one to be physical as well, but ultimately ending in a draw," says site scribe Drew Epperley.

n/a% MASSIVE REPORT ... no pick
Head on over to Pat Murphy's preview to found out which NY player Michael Parkhurst likes.

MY THOUGHTS, HOW IT WILL PLAY
Best player in MLS history
Much more important match for the Crew than it is for the Red Bulls today. A loss for the home side would mean 4 pts in 4 at Crew Stadium to start the year - bad form at home dooms MLS teams to bottom half.

A lot of people picking a draw today and I'm thinking that comes from the feeling we have one team on the rise and another slumping. Humans don't like to change their perceptions of things until they are forced too. Most out there still see the Crew as probably something they are not and on the other side see NY as a team that they are hesitant to call a winner even though they are in form and have, quite possibly, the best MLS player in history playing for them.

If Thierry Henry plays tonight it might be a long one for the Crew. Tim Cahill doesn't really impact the match as much but having both of them out doesn't make things any easier. On Wednesday NY looked scary good and they usually play well in Columbus.

If Berhalter starts Dominic Oduro or Justin Meram in the midfield for suspended Bernardo Anor we will probably see a fast paced open match, which is one that sort of favors NY.

We see. Stay warm out there Crew fans that aren't watching the Blue Jackets and aren't there just for the dollar night specials, and not there for the college discounted tickets, and not there just to get drunk in the supporters' section...

- wait, how many does that leave actually watching the game?

Crew Rd 5 Predictions, at SJE

The Columbus Crew are in San Jose today to take on the Earthquakes. Kickoff is 3 PM EST, 1 PM PST. Weather should be just awful out there today.

 GAME NOTES
CLB : Team still has clean bill of health
CLB : Lineup not expected to change much
CLB : Look to get back on plan after last week's loss
SJE : Only played 3 MLS games in 2014 (+CCL action)
SJE : Looking for first win of 2014, losses to Sporting and New England
SJE : Off last week

 TEN PREDICTIONS
Percentage on left is accuracy so far this season in picking result. Sorted Best to Worst.

75% WIN DRAW WIN ... COLUMBUS CREW
For the 5th match in a row, Win Draw Win likes the Crew. Wiseguys like this one to have some goals in it (which is different) 1-3 to the Away side. "Your Vote" also likes Columbus with 48% (Draw 29%, SJ 22%).

50% COLUMBUS DISPATCH ... SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (lean)
Adam Jardy thinks the story this week will be how the Crew rebounds from their seasons first defeat last week. Edge seems to go to SJ because of how physical they are and the fact that they are looking for their first win. Pick up a copy of today's Dispatch here in town if you get a chance!

50% WHOSCORED.COM ... COLUMBUS CREW
Graham Ruthven likes the Crew this week to "return to winning ways." Noting the great start the team has. He also mentions Scott Cooper is "under increasing pressure to turn their form around." Crew have higher whoscored.com rating.

25% BET365 ... SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES
Looks like SJ is getting better than even today 10/11 (12/5 Draw, 3/1 Crew). A low scoring 1-0 match most likely.

25% GOAL.COM ... DRAW
No author listed on this lonely game preview but he/she does note that, "fans hoping their side will pick up three points may be disappointed if recent history holds. The previous three meetings between the Quakes and the Crew have ended in draws." Readers have chosen SJ this week.

25% HOME TEAM ... SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES
Well, they have this going for them today.

25% MLSSOCCER ... SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES
The team over at the corp league offices likes the 'Quakes today, 3 of 6 picking them. Two draw, one lone pick Crew from Kristel Valencia. Kristel has lowest accuracy rate of the group.

0% WV HOOLIGAN ... SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES
Drew Epperley likes "the Quakes chances being at home in this one as Chris Wondolowski gets rolling here." He also says that "Columbus has to show that they can be the same club that impressed" early on. Why do they have to do that? For power rankings?

n/a% TABLE POSITION ... COLUMBUS CREW
We'll go ahead and kick this on off now that it is past week five.

n/a % MASSIVE REPORT ... (no pick)
Head on over to MR to check out Pat Murphy's preview of the game to find out how seriously the Crew are taking this match. His preview is excellent as always and full of pre-match quotes and overloading with important information.

MY THOUGHTS ON AN INTERESTING MATCHUP
Weather is a common player complaint about playing away to San Jose. Garber to address issue?
First thought that ran through my mind when seeing this game on the schedule was that of relief because it wasn't going to be a 11 PM start but after thinking on it decided that it was sort of a bummer though because I like seeing the evening sky and the sun set on Buck Shaw. There is something about the color and shadows I love about it. I think some of it comes from the fact that the stands sit low and allow the sun to drench the pitch and players in magical hues... take it away Kerouac.

“Soon it got dusk, a grapy dusk, a purple dusk over tangerine groves and long melon fields; the sun the color of pressed grapes, slashed with burgandy red, the fields the color of love" ...

... where was I?

As mentioned a few game previews above, these two have played to low scoring ties in recent times but each one has been memorable in its own right. Last time this matchup was lopsided was a few years ago, late game eastern time out there and the Crew got stomped 3-0.

San Jose is a team that feeds off emotion. If they get going early, it's bad for the Crew. If they are in it late, it is bad for the Crew. Chris Wondolowski's last game being one where he played well for the USMNT against Mexico is bad for the Crew. Fact that SJ has only lost one of last 22 at Buck Shaw is... well you get the point.

Those things are all emotional type things a team like San Jose feeds off of. The Crew are taking on the mentality of their new coach Gregg Berhalter and he is the antithesis of riding on emotion (so far anyway). The way he is building this team is exactly the right poison for a group like San Jose has.

It might be cold and boring, but if Berhalter can get it right he will win games like the one. I reckon that's what I'll be looking for today but if they'd kindly leave the camera running until the sun is finished setting this evening, I'd be looking for that too.

Predictions: Crew (H) v Fire

The Columbus Crew host the Chicago Fire today. Scheduled start is 7:30 PM EST (6:30 Central). Looks like temps will be high 60s and the field a little damp by the time this one kicks off.

GAME NOTES
CLB: Won 4 of last 6 at home
CLB: Low scoring, 7 GF only 3 GA in last 6
CLB: Lineup should match last week
CHI: 5 pts from last 6 on the road
CHI: Sit in 5th playoff spot
CHI: Have been Crew 3x already this year (2 MLS, 1 USOC)

----------
PREDICTIONS
(in no particular order)

1. WV HOOLIGAN ... DRAW
"I think a draw seems most fitting with these two squads with the way they’re both playing at the moment," says Drew Epperley. One all by the end.

2. WIN DRAW WIN ... CREW
The sports betting aggregate site likes the Crew this week. We've got a 1-0 Home Stake and a 'Your Vote' pick leaning Columbus (46%) but followed closely by a Draw (37%).

3. TABLE POSITION ... FIRE

4. MASSIVE REPORT ... CREW
Patrick Guldan believes that, "The first goal will be a little more important as the Crew will have to chase the game if they fall behind." He see's this as a 1-0 Crew victory.

5. GOAL.COM ... FIRE (EVEN)
For the first time this year we get Ives Galarcep writing up the summary. He doesn't outright pick the Fire but he does spend most of the time talking them up. "...Chicago will try to have Arevalo-Rios and Jeff Larentowicz limit Higuain's touches and space. The Fire also have the players to neutralize the Crew's set-piece threat." He also mentions that Mike Magee is having an MVP like year. On the 'reader picks' portion we see a draw.

6. BET365 ... CREW
This is more of a 'lean' toward the Home team this week, which is what is reflected over at Win Draw Win. 7/5 Crew, 9/4 Draw and 19/10 Chicago. Most likely result is 1-1 (X).

7. HOME TEAM ... CREW

8. MLSSOCCER.COM ... DRAW
Even here with three on the Pick 'Em panel going draw, two Fire and one Crew (most accurate man, Matt Doyle).

9. WHOSCORED.COM ... DRAW
Graham Ruthven likes this a 1-1 as well, saying; "The Fire should be motivated as they arrive at Crew Stadium, but the hosts' front three can trouble any team in MLS."

10. COLUMBUS DISPATCH ... CREW
Man on the beat Adam Jardy thinks the "Crew is due" against Chicago based on previous results not quite bouncing the Crew way.

----------
MY THOUGHTS ON THE GAME

It's been a long, long journey for the Chicago Fire to get to this point in the 5th and final playoff spot. They were practically left for dead after only the first couple months of the season.

In fact, it was probably the ugly win the got against a visiting Crew back late April that finally got their season going the right way.

With these teams meeting so many times this year (4 if you count the reserve match) you have to figure we won't see much different out there today. That is: a choppy midfield scrum.

Chicago knows full well that Federico Higuain is the key to this team getting goals.

1. Set pieces (the Crew lifeblood this year, which the Fire has the height to defend)

2. Higuain's movement in the middle (where the Fire know how to jam it up).

It's these two simple things that the Fire do well that has beaten the 2013 Crew.

It would be impressive if Brian Bliss pulls Dominic Oduro out of the midfield and places a competent mid player in his spot. That would help free things up a little bit but I fully expect that this weeks lineup will be the same as last.

Fire probably know that as well. In fact, all Crew opposition know that pattern which is why the Crew have only won back to back games once this year.

Should be a great atmosphere at Crew Stadium tonight. Enjoy the game.

Predictions: Crew (H) v Houston

Midweek matchup at Crew Stadium tonight as the Houston Dynamo are in town to take on the Columbus Crew. 7:30 PM EST start.

GAME NOTES:
-CLB: Haven't beat Houston at home since GBS played.
-CLB: Won 3 of last 6 at home, +1 GD
-CLB: Freshen up: Looking like Gehrig, Finlay getting nod.
-HOU: Only 1 win in last 6 on road, -9 GD (bad)
-HOU: Missing Garcia, Jermaine Taylor to International duty.
-HOU: Sitting in playoff position.

----------
PREDICTIONS:
(in no particular order)

1. WINDRAWWIN.COM ... HOUSTON
The 'your votes' section is 37% Dynamo and 27% Crew this week. Close enough to call it fairly even. What pushes the lean to Houston is the Small Stake 0:1 Away side.

2. GOAL.COM ... EVEN
"Columbus has lost five of its last seven matches, and its playoff hopes are on life support as a result," says Avi Creditor. "The Crew can nary afford to drop more points at home against one of its playoff-place competitors." The reader prediction section has this one as a Draw.

3. HOME TEAM ... COLUMBUS

4. WHOSCORED.COM ... HOUSTON
"Kinnear should be able to pick his players up as they head into the race for the play-offs and they're expected to perform well against a Crew side struggling with injuries and suspensions." 1-2 Score prediction.

5. BET365 ... COLUMBUS
Tight enough to almost call it even. The Crew are at 6/5 and Dynamo 9/5 (at the time of this writing 11 AM).

6. MASSIVE REPORT ... EVEN
Wise words from Mr. Guldan today; "Bliss and the Crew hope to get that new coach bump. It's been proven to be more of a myth, but the changes on offense and defense likely will spark a more competitive team." Patrick thinks this will go down as a 1-1 draw.

7. TABLE POSITION ... HOUSTON

8. COLUMBUS DISPATCH ... COLUMBUS
Man on the Crew beat Adam Jardy thinks that new coach Brian Bliss will give the team a jolt. He also makes note of another competitive advantage, "The Dynamo has had one fewer day of rest, and it could be a long evening for the visitors." Check out Jardy's commentary on his Dispatch blog "Covering the Crew." Excellent.

9. WVHOOLIGAN.COM ... --
(no preview yet, will update)

10. MLSSOCCER.COM ... --
(no prediction yet, will update)

----------
MY THOUGHTS:
Houston is going to be missing a couple key guys but Kinnear always seems to be able to do just enough once the calendar turns to fall. Tonight's game isn't probably seen as a must win to him but certainly important.

The Crew, on the other hand, are in the middle of a gigantic organizational adjustment. Hard not to think this makes this either a huge 3-0 kind of Crew win or a 0-5 horror show.

I'm never quite comfortable with Houston teams. They just seem to do enough to get into the playoffs and like to draw when in town. They don't need this game, per say, but they will probably go for the draw early if the Crew prove to be stubborn in the first 30 minutes.

Nice and cool today in Columbus. Probably in the 60s by kickoff and clear skys. Has the makings of a beautiful mid-western sunset, if nothing else. Enjoy.
