TV Soccer Viewership: Oct 5-11

The table below includes all soccer-related cable programs that were on cable last week, sorted by viewership total.

1. The USA v Jamaica matchup took the top spot during this international break. TUDN's coverage of The Mexican National Team also did well, particularly considering that the games are usually cast simultaneously on their over-the-air channel - as of the time of this post, I don't have those numbers, they are normally around 1m, however.

2. ESPN continues to do well broadcasting games involving big European national teams. The Spain v France matchup was played directly opposite the NFL on Sunday afternoon. If you combine both the ESPN and TUDN broadcast, it tops the USMNT match (626k) at number 1.

3. TUDN's soccer-related programs like Futbal Central and Linea de Cuatro did well during this international break.

4. UNIVERSO showing up 3 times this week is good for them. I'm not sure if it is related to their recent addition to YouTubeTV, but much gut tells me that it is. YouTubeTV is metered by Nielsen by default. You can turn this tracking off in settings.

TV Soccer Viewership: Sep 28-Oct 4

Here are the top soccer matches/shows on cable last week.

The Premier League jumped way out in front last week with one of the more popular matchups in the world right now. The 774k for the City/Liverpool game topped the over-the-air Arsenal/Brighton broadcast (678k). Both games pulled an impressive 0.44 rating.

TUDN had a good week overall with a variety of games that span Liga MX, Campeones Cup, and the UEFA Champions League.

MLS missed on a matchup that it wants to be a big deal. The Galaxy v LAFC only pulled 171 on ESPN and another 75k on ESPN Deportes. MLS is in a sort of funk right now in terms of footprint on television. MLS likely can't wait for the playoffs to get started as this 2021 regular season is fizzling out.

TV Soccer Viewership: Sep 21-27

1. Last week saw Liga MX pull a strong 666k on TUDN for the America v. Guadalajara match. A reminder that TUDN is in about half the homes in the US as its competitors (ESPN, NBCSN, FS1).

2. Right behind them, we see the familiar wall of Premier League programs. The Spurs v. Arsenal was an obvious hit because of the large fanbases in the United States. It's also worth noting that this match was on during early NFL games - really impressive stuff that I'm not sure has happened before in regards to soccer on TV in the US.

3. Further down this list are two disappointing MLS games. The energy has just evaporated from this season. I'm not sure the reasons for it, but it could have to do with resources being diverted to trying to hammer out a TV deal and the league navigating the Leagues Cup. Whatever it is, it's a terrible look.

4. The USWNT 2nd match against Paraguay didn't draw much interest. I tend to think scheduling these type of barnstorming games hurt the teams more than help. Of note; TUDN pulled 108k for the match.
