Cable Soccer Viewership, Mar 23-29

The Mexican u23's and TUDN top the international break list of cable soccer shows last week. The Mexico v USA match lands at 6th place among all cable soccer programs this year - 2nd among Spanish language games. Monterrey v America, Fox Deportes is number one at 657k. The EPL on NBC holds 8 of the top 10 spots.

Of note is a FA Women's Soccer League Match jumping on here at 63k (NBCSN).

Over on terrestrial television, the USMNT match against Northern Ireland on FOX pulled 835k (0.49 rating), which is in the range of a MLS Cup final. It's good, but anything featuring guys from "the old country" will get a decent number (in soccer terms).

Cable Soccer Viewership, Mar 16-22

Cable TV viewership numbers for soccer programs/games over the last week.

Callouts

1. A week off for the Premier League meant that Mexican soccer (U23's and Liga MX) had the main stage pretty much to themselves.

2. The Olympic Qualifier USMNT match vs. the Dominican Republic performed better on TUDN than on FS1

3. There was very little interest in the FS1 broadcast (English) for the Mexico v Dominican match (86k). The Spanish language broadcast of the same game on TUND - 277k.

On MLS merging with Liga MX...

The assumption is that the American audience on (ESPN, FS1) with stick with MLS and then grow with the inclusion of Liga MX, but looking at the numbers here and of late? I think that the growth will be on Spanish Language channels (UniMas, ESPN Deportes, Fox Deportes, TUDN if they bid on the next deal), while the English language drops measurably. There doesn't appear to be an appetite on the English-speaking side of the game broadcasts. The audience behavior is such that if it is on in Spanish, then that is the preferred option. With that, MLS melds(?) with Liga MX instead of becoming a partner. Think of it as a supersized Liga MX.

Cable Soccer Viewership, Mar 9-15

Two Premier League games top the chart this week with +500k viewership. The Tottenham v Arsenal match lands in the top 10 soccer games this year on cable.

A few notes:

1. 349k for the Champions League match is a great number for TUDN (in less than half the homes of some of the other networks).

2. The Premier League Studio numbers continue to play well on NBCSN.

3. Basketball, predictably, is dominating March. College Basketball (Men's) has half the top 20 sporting events. NBA 8. The other two are UFC and NASCAR.

4. The most viewed soccer game/show in 2021 is the Manchester Derby - It is the only soccer game in the top 50 sporting events on cable this year at 48th.

5. The most viewed NHL match is 65th on the year.

Viewership YOY, MLS Fading

Over on Twitter, I posted a quick analysis of soccer viewership using the dates January 1 - March 11, year over year. The mid-March date has significance because it is almost all soccer leagues across the planet stopped playing.

There are a couple changes to the "normal" schedule, still, this year, but for the most part everything is getting back to normal. Well, sans fans... and sans, astonishingly, MLS

So who is benefitting from MLS sitting out the month of March? Let's take a look.

Below will show the top 50 cable soccer programs Jan 1 - March 11 last year and this year (same time frame).

It's pretty simple and easy to see what happened. Without things like the CONCACAF Champions League and MLS (US Men also dropping to lows in interest), viewers have shifted over to the English Premier League. It's even grown in its number one spot over Liga MX because of it.

I've been commenting over the years that the EPL is siphoning off MLS fans, and it is seen here as well. The EPL hits a sweet spot with US consumers of sports as it "fits" in to the routine and doesn't have to compete with the "big 4" directly.

How? It's on in the mornings and daytime hours, meaning general sports fans that watch a lot of things (a good chunk of the MLS demographic) can watch that ("EPL Mornings") and then switch over to whatever they want in the evening (most likely some sort of basketball this time of year).

Again, I think it is a grave mistake that MLS pushed the season back almost 6 weeks. The Premier League is humming and both the NBA and NHL will be hitting their late-season/playoff stride right as MLS kicks off.

-------------------------

In the chart at the top of this post, it's easy to identify two events that have increased the Premier League's interest over MLS (and other soccer events). First, it's the USMNT missing out on the 2018 world up (the bend in my hastily put together graph) and now, this late winter/spring.

Cable Soccer Viewership, Mar 2-8

There was quite a bit of soccer on cable television last week.

The Premier League match between Manchester United and City was the clear winner in this time frame. It even beat out the Bundesliga match on terrestrial, over the air ABC (576k viewers, but its 0.35 rating edged out the Manchester derby's 0.31).

A reminder that my analysis here only extends to soccer on cable TV. There are no regular games to track on over-the-air channels so ratings there are wildly inconsistent. That said, you can take the temperature, in regards to interest, which is why I usually mention them in the summary. But using them as a measuring stick, like MLS likes to do, is a way to goose numbers. In other words, it's not within my scope (right now).

Speaking of MLS, around this time is when they normally kick-off their season. This year, however, they have pushed it back a month. I think this decision is a severe mistake. As we have seen with other leagues (below), consistency and normalcy are incredibly important to keeping interest.

Major League Soccer has been all over the map in terms of schedule since the pandemic began. I don't believe fan interest and engagement will just "snap-back" when they start up in April. It will take a few months for ratings to ratchet back up and I'm not sure they can afford to be missing out on much more revenue before they have to make some tough decisions.
