TV Soccer Viewership: Nov 16-22, 2021

1. Soccer got a mini spotlight on broadcast tv last week with three games spanning multiple leagues that, for me, say a lot about the order of things regarding the popularity of soccer in the US on English language TV. Here's the list:

877k - NBC Premier League (Arsenal v Liverpool)
525k - CBS NWSL Washington v Chicago
435k - ABC MLS Playoffs NYCFC v Atlanta

The NWSL and Premier League matches were on at the same time, as well. I wonder how much demo overlap is there. I suspect there is a lot. Had one or the other been on we might have seen a number 30% higher.

2. Liga MX playoffs/postseason is underway and they took the top two spots on cable last week. It's a rare win over the Premier League this year for Liga MX.

3. MLS Playoffs are getting off the ground. Their first couple of games weren't on English TV and didn't pull a notable number on TUDN. This past Sunday saw one game on broadcast (above) and another on cable (253k on ESPN). Both games were on ESPN Deportes but did not place in the top 150 cable shows on the week, which is likely due to the Liga MX postseason matches.

Why is the PL TV deal so big?

The English Premier League announced a large new TV deal yesterday. NBC has retained the United States' rights to broadcast the league for the next six years.

The deal:
Length: 6 yrs (2022-2028)
Cost: $2.6 billion
Cost per Year: $430 million
Rev per Team, per Yr: $22 million

Just about every network was involved in bidding for the league. ESPN, CBS, Amazon, WarnerMedia, etc which pushed the yearly increase to three times the previous deal of $150m a year.

So, why is it so big? What made a foreign soccer league so desirable?

Everyone is reporting on the basic figures, but nobody seems to know the answers to these two questions. Here's what I think.

A. It's the top league in the world. Technically, it can be debated where the better players are but Americans love the perceived best, the richest, the most exciting.

B. It fits The US Sports Culture Calendar.

For me, this is easily the most important ingredient. "Culture" is something that takes generations to form and once it takes hold, it's nearly impossible to change (or destroy). The US has formed a very defined sports culture.

• NFL and College Football in the fall.
• MLB Playoffs/World Series
• NBA at Christmas
• Bowl games, NFL Playoffs
• NHL in the winter
• March belongs to College Basketball
• NBA, NHL Finals
• MLB is hotdogs and beer in the summer

That's basically what it has been since the 1980s and etched in stone after the 1994 MLB strike. There's not a lot of room for anything else.

SOCCER IS THE NEXT BIG THING
The PL fits, foreign summer tournaments fit, MLS does not

Major League Soccer tries to squeeze in during the lightest part of the sports calendar. 1/3 of the decision to use (and continue to use) this calendar was logistic - most MLS early teams shared stadiums with other pro teams. Another third of the decision was the thought that young people wanted something super-rad and baseball was for old people - and the final third was there were more national windows open.

MLS has been sitting on this for 25 years. Each decision MLS made still impacts the league and it is reflected in ratings and viewership. In effect, because of the way they are built, they compete with just about everything on the calendar above.

Enter the Premier League and NBC.

The network's commitment to covering the league is key while the seriousness and passion of the coverage come off as authentic. Because of where the league is, it solved all of Major League Soccer's challenges I mentioned above.

1. They don't share stadiums.

2. People of all ages like soccer, not just young people.

3. The most important... free morning windows for games. "IT FITS" into the US calendar instead of having to try and elbow its way in (like MLS).

In the past, for European soccer, networks would put up a game or two on random weekend mornings and then move on to some other sport more in tune with the US Sports Calendar. Even now, we see that kind of coverage with ESPN and the Bundesliga. They put up a couple games before sending it over to ESPN+ in favor of morning college football and NFL shows. It's a good example of trying to squeeze something into an existing culture thinking it'll take root.

For my entire lifetime (which is approaching a half-century, Christ!), "soccer" has not been the problem. Americans love soccer. In the decade I was born, the old NASL was the thing for a number of years. Rec leagues started all over the country in the 80s. The World Cup in 1994 is still the most attended and watched in the tournament's history. The Women's World Cup in 1999 is a proud touchstone moment for anyone generation X and above in this country. From that point forward it was the USMNT run in 2002. "Go-go USA" in 2010. In the last 10 years, we've seen the rise in Liga MX's popularity to the point where it gets big 4 types of ratings (but enter stage right, future changes, unfortunately).

Soccer has always been here. I think ratings will continue to improve over the next 6 years and if NBC keeps doing what they are doing, the Premier League will become a 10 month long normal part of the US calendar.

TV Soccer Viewership: Nov 9-15, 2021

A light week of soccer on TV last week, but there is a lot to get to. So here we go:

1. The USA v Mexico match continues to draw interest across both English and Spanish language television. ESPN2 carried the match this cycle and it delivered a solid 1.3m viewers, which was good enough for the number 2 overall program on the night for all cable programs. Pulling back a bit, the 1.3m is just the 16th best viewership number on the year on cable. The list is dominated by the Euro's last summer.

2. On broadcast TV, Univision pulled 2.3m for USA v Mexico. Over on ABC the World Cup qualifier between Spain and Sweden got 441k.

3. Also on broadcast TV was a surprise appearance of the FA Women's Super League (England). The Chelsea v City matchup pulled 320k viewers on NBC. The morning game on NBCSN that I enjoyed did not finish in the top 150 cable games on the day.

4. The MLS regular season is over so it's time for a quick look at how they did on cable vs last year on English language TV.

HOUSEKEEPING NOTES
Every blue moon or so I have to clarify how I consume soccer TV ratings.

A) I don't include broadcast TV soccer events in my analysis. I'll post the numbers, but I don't feel there's enough schedule consistency for it to tell me much more than "oh, that's an interesting number." It's too random for me. An example is that MLS admits to using broadcast windows to goose ratings. This year they wanted to have strong early-season ratings so they worked with ABC to front-load the season. Ultimately, there's nothing to compare it to so tying it to more consistent and more frequent cable numbers is like adding a booster (for lack of a better word). I'm sensitive to this because of my background in manufacturing and managing multiple lines of the same product. If I send all my supervisors to work on the line for a couple hours it would crush the other lines. Should I act on that and say that line is my best line? Of course not. It actually tells me less about what is going on with the line.

B) I generally don't combine numbers for the same event if it is simultaneously shown in English and Spanish. The main reason for this is that the demographics are different, but it's also a time thing for me. This isn't my job and it is time-consuming tracking down games on ESPN and Fox Deportes that don't fall in the top 150 shows on the night. That said, I have been looking at how TUDN is impacting MLS ratings on English Language networks. They are only in half the homes as ESPN and Fox Sports but they do pull a measurable number for most games.

TV Soccer Viewership: Nov 2-8, 2021

- A big week for the Premier League last week. 643k for the Liverpool v West Ham matchup falls in the top 20 of league games (non-internationals) on the year.

- Liga MX posted solid ratings for a full slate of games leading up to a big international week.

- MLS had a rough week. Decision Day turned out to be a dud.

- MLS is down -21% for the months August, September, October YOY on ESPN. The Premier League on NBCSN is up +15%. Liga MX on TUDN is down slightly -2.5%.

- On broadcast TV the game between Newcastle and Brighton pulled 512k and a 0.31 rating.

TV Soccer Viewership: Oct 26-Nov 1, 2021

Another busy week of soccer on US television.

Leading the way last week was NBC's Saturday afternoon matchup between Manchester United and the Tottenham Hotspur. The 919k and 0.53 rating means another strong rating for the league up against noon College Football kickoffs.

Over on cable TV it was the Concacaf Champions League Final between Monterrey and America that took the top spot. Not far off from that was Crystal Palace v Man City on NBCSN and a Liga MX match between Cruz Azul and America.

Elsewhere, the USWNT pulled close to 300k for their second friendly against Korea. MLS finally jumped back over 200k on Sunday. TUDN's coverage of MLS also returned to measurable ratings. It's not necessarily "good" news for MLS, but at least it offsets the fact that 4 games since the all-star break haven't gotten a rating on FS1 including last Wednesday's LAFC v Sporting KC game.
