Cable Soccer Viewership, Mar 30 - Apr 5

The Premier League returned last week and owned most of the top soccer programs on cable. The u23 Olympic Qualifiers wrapped up with a nice number making it the 5th most watch soccer event on cable YTD (EPL/Manchester games are top 4).

Concacaf Champions League started last night so this is the last week without MLS teams in the list. It'll be two weeks before we see regular-season MLS ratings. Almost there. I'll post up numbers from the CCL on Twitter later today.

2021 is a critical season in regards to television for MLS. More eyes will be on the numbers as the current TV deal (which bundles MLS/USMNT/USWNT) is up in 2022. Will they take a similar hit to numbers as the rest of the major sports in the US, is the question. EPL and some of these other soccer leagues have not seen the slide. We'll see.

Cable Soccer Viewership, Mar 16-22

Cable TV viewership numbers for soccer programs/games over the last week.

Callouts

1. A week off for the Premier League meant that Mexican soccer (U23's and Liga MX) had the main stage pretty much to themselves.

2. The Olympic Qualifier USMNT match vs. the Dominican Republic performed better on TUDN than on FS1

3. There was very little interest in the FS1 broadcast (English) for the Mexico v Dominican match (86k). The Spanish language broadcast of the same game on TUND - 277k.

On MLS merging with Liga MX...

The assumption is that the American audience on (ESPN, FS1) with stick with MLS and then grow with the inclusion of Liga MX, but looking at the numbers here and of late? I think that the growth will be on Spanish Language channels (UniMas, ESPN Deportes, Fox Deportes, TUDN if they bid on the next deal), while the English language drops measurably. There doesn't appear to be an appetite on the English-speaking side of the game broadcasts. The audience behavior is such that if it is on in Spanish, then that is the preferred option. With that, MLS melds(?) with Liga MX instead of becoming a partner. Think of it as a supersized Liga MX.

Cable Soccer Viewership, Mar 2-8

There was quite a bit of soccer on cable television last week.

The Premier League match between Manchester United and City was the clear winner in this time frame. It even beat out the Bundesliga match on terrestrial, over the air ABC (576k viewers, but its 0.35 rating edged out the Manchester derby's 0.31).

A reminder that my analysis here only extends to soccer on cable TV. There are no regular games to track on over-the-air channels so ratings there are wildly inconsistent. That said, you can take the temperature, in regards to interest, which is why I usually mention them in the summary. But using them as a measuring stick, like MLS likes to do, is a way to goose numbers. In other words, it's not within my scope (right now).

Speaking of MLS, around this time is when they normally kick-off their season. This year, however, they have pushed it back a month. I think this decision is a severe mistake. As we have seen with other leagues (below), consistency and normalcy are incredibly important to keeping interest.

Major League Soccer has been all over the map in terms of schedule since the pandemic began. I don't believe fan interest and engagement will just "snap-back" when they start up in April. It will take a few months for ratings to ratchet back up and I'm not sure they can afford to be missing out on much more revenue before they have to make some tough decisions.
