TV Soccer Viewership: Nov 23-29, 2021

Lots of action last week. Liga MX and MLS Playoffs, Europa and Champions Leagues, a USWNT, and the EPL. Notes:

1. MLS Wrestles with Thanksgiving Day Ratings
There was a ratings correction on the first MLS game in Thanksgiving history for the league. A +7m viewership number stunned just about everyone before it was ratcheted down to 1.8m on FOX. The mighty NFL was the lead-in and it paid off, in a way. A closer look at how it played out, however, isn't as pretty as some people may like. The NFL lead-in had some 26m viewers. It shed about 94% by the time the MLS game came on.

MLS says it is one of the most-watched games in its history but doesn't mention have the 7m that watched the pregame show is practically the combined number for the last 8 years of MLS Cup finals. Why didn't they mention it? Shouldn't the pre-game host be getting a giant raise? No. Because it's more of a "one-off" event.

2. MLS without the NFL
Things returned to normal on Sunday when RSL played KC on ABC. 426k. Overall, MLS is averaging 237k for Playoff games on cable. 494k including the two broadcast games. If you take out the "one-off" NFL game, MLS is averaging 269k for the 2021 playoffs.

3. Liga MX completely dominated last week.

4. The USWNT Friendly v Australia might have done better had it not been on FS2.

5. USL's Final was aired on ESPN and pulled 84k. It might have been good to get over 100k, but considering that the league is practically invisable on national tv all year, it's pretty good.

One final note about TV ratings; Broadcast ratings can really be misleading. The MLS game having to get clarification and subsequent change is a good example. In the manufacturing/process world - seeing a change like that would call into question all the numbers. How many were like this that didn't have a spotlight? We don't know. Therefore, it's one of those things you push off to the side.
