Goal + Assist Leaders, MLS 2020

Below are the Goal + Assist leaders per 90 minutes (no penalties, minimum of 900 minutes played) for the 2020 MLS Regular Season. Included are age and last known wages (the MLSPA did not release 2020 salaries).

After putting these together for the past decade I've started to be able to tease out a player or two worth noting. This year it's Cole Bassett, who has been identified by foreign clubs including Arsenal, who had him over for some U-23 training recently. Colorado and Arsenal share ownership, so it isn't all that unexpected that he's getting a chance to show his talents.

MLS is reporting that several German clubs are looking at him, but who isn't getting a look from German clubs right now. The last two USMNT coaches have obvious ties to that region, Jürgen Klinsmann and now Gregg Berhalter.

FINAL MLS Table, Covid Year 2020

MLS wrapped up possibly the strangest regular season in their history yesterday. Most teams were able to play 23 games (11 less than the normal 34), but not all. 7 of the 12 teams in the Western Conference couldn't get to 23, while all in the East did.

The Philadelphia Union are the winners of the Supporters' Shield this year.

The Columbus Crew were able to finish 4th by way of games won over Orlando. The Crew were on top of the standings for a good chunk of the season, but away results, as well as injuries, took hold.

The MLS Playoffs start next Friday, November 20th.

Soccer TV Ratings, Oct 30 - Nov 2

MLS disappoints on ABC and Premier League continues its strong ratings in the shadow of the NFL.

Two of the better teams in MLS couldn't top 300k viewers on traditional broadcast ABC on Sunday, finished at a surprisingly low 283k. MLS and ABC were hoping for some late season Supporters' Shield drama, if not crowning the regular season winner, during the 3:30 PM EST matchup between Columbus and Philadelphia. The Crew rained on the parade a bit by beating the favorites.

Meanwhile, over on NBC, the Premier League matchup between West Ham and Liverpool pulled 766k in the early "NFL Window."

Here are the rest of the cable ratings for soccer over this past Halloween weekend:

Crew Caution lost the Supporters' Shield

It's easy to see how close the Columbus Crew came to winning the Supporters' Shield this season. Just one more win, or even a draw, would have put them right there on the last day of the season. As it stands, with two games left they are six points off Toronto and Philly.

Philly would have to lose their remaining game to New England by a couple goals and Columbus would have to beat Orlando and Atlanta by multiple goals each to make up the 7 goal difference. Possible? Of course. Likely? No. Toronto would also have to lose and Columbus wins both their remaining games. The Crew have a GD edge on them.

It has to be a bit frustrating when looking at the different ways the Crew could have won this. The mini-slump towards the end, injuries or not, was just enough to put this team off the pace.

The good news, however, is that the team was very cautious with injuries and that set them up for an MLS Cup-winning run.

Tim Bezbatchenko could afford to have a clear-eyed view of priorities in MLS before coming to Columbus. After a successful run in Toronto (unlimited MLSE funds, in MLS terms) is a luxury that he doesn't have in most other MLS markets, let alone Columbus. Especially moving forward after this year when money gets tighter.

WIN THE FIGHT YOU'RE IN

Part of me thinks Columbus held back on putting out full strength rosters (just a gut feel) and gave too much time to players not quite ready for MLS. In a normal season where they are bopping around the middle of the table, that is fine. But when you are the lead horse in winning the Supporters' Shield? Go for it, because I don't think it'll come around again for a while.
