Tuesday MLS Viewership Hitting Highs

Two MLS Playoff matches on Tuesday, November 24th hit post-pandemic highs for the league. Both games were on ESPN, back to back. The quasi lead-in on FS1 also did... okay.

At 8:00 PM EST Supporters' Shield winner Philadelphia lost to Bruce Arena's New England as 478k watched (a post-pandemic high). Then at 10:30 PM EST Seattle topped LAFC, pulling 457k, good enough for 3rd highest MLS rating since June.

The FS1 match between Toronto and Nashville saw the underdogs pull off a 0-1 win at 6:00 PM drew 240k. It's possible that this somewhat surprising result stirred the MLS faithful and curious onlookers for the ESPN games later in the night.

The strong performance of both put two more MLS events in the top 20 most viewed since things got restarted after COVID shut everything down in March.

Toronto Stomped in '19 CCL Opener

Toronto FC's competitive season started last night with a trip down to Panama that saw them get played off the pitch 4:0 to Independiente in CONCACAF Champions League play. This comes just a few weeks after Eric Wynalda's Las Vegas Lights beat them down 5-1 in preseason play.

After a miserable 2018 MLS season, there is no question as to the trouble that TFC now finds themselves in.

Questions should be asked about the motivation of key players like team captain Michael Bradley, Belgian international Laurent Ciman and head coach Greg Vanney. A sinkhole has opened up beneath the team. There is simply no excuse for last season and the start to this season.

Toronto's payroll likely eclipses the entire Panamanian league. Hell, Bradley and Altidore's yearly wages are likely more. Excuses come fast and plentiful during the CCL competition each year. "MLS is still in preseason," and "Concacaf refs and away surfaces" top the list of most common. But the true reasons for Toronto, and MLS, struggling in this league comes down to the effort and the moss that grows on players from the low wattage MLS competition. They are simply not sharp enough or motivated enough to compete at in a high-intensity environment.

Despite having the highest paid player in the hemisphere, MLS has never had a team win the current iteration of the CCL.

Preseason Look: Toronto FC

Toronto enters this season after a flat 2018. Much of the talent they had in their outstanding 2017 was still there, but the motivation to climb that mountain again last year just wasn't there. Compounding that was an oft-injured Víctor Vázquez.

Vazquez appears to be moving on to Al Arabi in Qatar at the moment, so I'm removing him from the roster. With that, Toronto do not have a suitable replacement. Some believe that Jay Chapman, a 25-year-old Canadian who appears to be able to hold his own but is far from a solid starting MLS player and even farther still from Vazquez's quality.

This creates a hole for an otherwise good team. Manager Greg Vanney is not afraid to shuffle up his tactics and approach to games, therefore it is possible that he will try and cover that hole by moving Jonathan Osorio or Marky Delgado centrally and moving Nick DeLeon or even Auro in the midfield. Five in the back with two wingers is also on the table.

As things sit right now, TFC is set up to have a fine season. So much depends on how motivated the group is. With some front office changes (namely Tim Bezbatchenko going to Columbus) and a little bit of uncertainty about the futures of Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco, that motivation might be leaving the room.

MLS teams have a hard time keeping this many high paid players together for long. It's going to be a wait and see. MLSE has a bottomless pit of money, but with the team stinking up the place last year it won't be surprising to see this team look completely different come summer if things are going their way.
