The Premier League has a strong final weekend.
Highlights/Lowlights:
• NBC's coverage of the 2021/22 Premier League season is over and the network will be happy with what was a big year for them. On Pay-TV: YTD (Jan 1 - now) 2022 they finished up 33% on USA vs NBCSN last year. 19% up over 2020.
• I'll be doing a separate post that includes viewership by PL club soon.
• Liga MX has reached its Clausura Finals (2 leg) series. Overall, TUDN's coverage is flat YOY (+2%) and over 2020 +5%. I think they'll be happy with that after a slow start to the 2022 season.
• MLS jumps 300k again this week on FS1 with the help of NASCAR (2.5m lead-in). On the year, MLS on FS1 is down from 190k to 176k YOY. They are up from a pandemic 152k.
• MLS's game on FOX was rained out and eventually moved to FS2, which didn't earn a rating. It has been noted but MLS will get a mulligan on this one. That said, a broadcast rainout is a killer for MLS and its sponsors. I imagine they might try and show another match later in the year. I'm shocked they didn't just postpone.
• Quiet on the MLS TV deal front. I did notice that Taylor Twellman, longtime MLS voice, hosted an evening Sportscenter on ESPN.
