Busy week for club soccer last week. NOTES:
• NBC's coverage continues to grow as 1.275m tuned in for the Spurs v City match. It's the best number for the PL is four years.
• PL games on USA did well, too. YOY the league is up 14% on cable. That's with the switch from NBCSN and Peacock in full swing. The surprise of the weekend might be the Leicester v Wolves match pulling nearly 700k.
• UEFA Champions League returned to broadcast TV with solid numbers that top MLS numbers on broadcast TV. The PSG/Real match and the Inter/Liverpool match pulled over 700k each. PSG's number is worth a callout because while it involved "super clubs" it did not involve a PL team (who have proven to draw interest).
• La Liga made an appearance on broadcast as well. ABC's La Liga match pulled 396k.
• There was a soccer match on every major broadcast network last week (CBS, NBC, ABC) except FOX. I don't know for sure, but I'm 99% confident that has never happened before.
• Concacaf Champions League is still largely in the early stages, competitively speaking. None of the matches on FS2 pulled a number. Only a couple on Spanish language jumped on this list.
• MLS starts this weekend. They have a game on FOX (Saturday, PDX v NER) as well as one each on FS1 and ESPN. Early season games (pre NBA, NHL playoffs) tend to do better than late season for MLS. MLB is currently in a holding pattern as far as the start of the season. I don't expect that to have much of an impact (positive) on MLS if they do delay the start of the season.
